Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo says he was very shocked DeMarcus Cousins signed with the Golden State Warriors for just $5.3 million.
Cousins, who turned down an extension from the New Orleans Pelicans before the season ended, didn’t receive any offers once free agency started and contacted the Warriors expressing interest in joining their squad.
“I was really very shocked,” Antetokounmpo told EuroHoops.net. “And also for the money he got. Some may have forgotten it, but I think he is the best big man in the NBA.”
Cousins tore his left Achilles’ tendon in January and is not expected to be ready to play until December. The All-Star big man was averaging 25.2 points and 12.9 rebounds in 48 games while shooting 47.0 percent from the field and 35.4 percent from three before getting injured.
Antetokounmpo also says he was shocked when he heard the news LeBron James was leaving the Eastern Conference to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers. James signed a four-year deal with the Lakers.
“Well, it’s true that his kids went to school in LA,” Antetokounmpo said. “But we were all shocked at first.”
Antetokounmpo is regarded by many as the best player in the East now that James is out West. The 23-year-old swingman averaged 26.9 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists this past season while shooting 52.9 percent from the field and 30.7 percent from three.
The Greek Freak has his own signature shoe and is on the cover of NBA2k. Antetokounmpo, however, says he doesn’t feel any added pressure.
“I felt I was the next chosen one since I arrived in the NBA,” he said. “There is no pressure on me. Do you know when there is pressure? When you do not have to eat. That’s pressure. If you are the next big thing, there’s no pressure. Most importantly, what I want to emphasize is that there has never been a non-American player with his own signature shoe by Nike. What I want to say is that all dreams can become true, if you work hard, if you believe and you do not give up. There will be bad days also, but if you believe, you will succeed.”
