Big man Powell to opt in, sign extension with Mavericks

Mavericks center Dwight Powell will reportedly opt in to his contract for next season and sign an extension.

Dallas Mavericks center Dwight Powell will opt in to his contract and sign an extension with the team, according to Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News.

This refutes an earlier report from Yahoo Sports that indicated Powell would opt out of his deal and enter unrestricted free agency this summer.

“Told by reliable source that, contrary to Yahoo report last month, Dwight Powell plans to opt in and play for the Mavs at $10.2M next season and sign sign an extension after July 5,” Townsend reported. “No wonder Powell spoke so certainly of remaining a Mav. Has until June 29 to make it official.”

Powell averaged a career-high 10.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in 72 games this past season. He has been with the Mavericks since the 2004-05 season — his first season in the league.
