The NBA champion Cavaliers have made a determination on veteran guard Dahntay Jones, a decision that was a must before Monday morning.
Otherwise, Jones’ full salary of more than $1.5 million would’ve been guaranteed for the 2016-17 season.
The Cavs officially waived Jones on Saturday.
Jones, 35, is a 6-foot-6 swingman and appeared in one regular season game for the Cavs after being called up from the D-League. He played in 15 playoff games, most often when the outcome had been already decided.
He did make an underrated contribution in Game 6 of the finals, offering a defensive boost off the bench and going on his own 5-0 run.
Other than that, his most memorable moment in a Cavs uniform came when was suspended for a shot to the groin of Raptors big man Bismack Biyombo in the playoffs.
Three opposing team executives contacted by Amico Hoops earlier in the week indicated they believed the Cavs should and would waive Jones.
He has played for eight NBA teams.
In other news, the Cavs have allowed two trade exceptions to expire from the deals involving Mike Miller and Brendan Haywood — deals that took place in July of last year. One exception was worth $2.8 million, the other in the vicinity of $2.3 million.
Cavaliers free agents LeBron James, J.R. Smith and James Jones remain unsigned.
