Celtics’ Smart out indefinitely with thumb ailment

Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart has a torn tendon in his right thumb and will be out indefinitely, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

The Celtics, who initially called the injury a sprain, will have Smart get a second opinion on the injury to determine if he needs surgery or not.

It’s a tough news day for the Celtics, who lost big man Daniel Theis to a season-ending surgery to repair a torn meniscus. All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving is also dealing with knee soreness.

Smart, one of the more rugged defenders in the league, is averaging 10.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 54 games this season.
