The Los Angeles Clippers are trading guard Austin Rivers to the Washington Wizards for center Marcin Gortat, according to a report from ESPN.
Rivers, the son of Clippers head coach Doc Rivers, has been with LA since 2014. He averaged a career high 15.1 points per game this past season and is slated to make $12.6 million in 2018-19.
The 27-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2019.
Gortat, meanwhile, has one year left on his contract and will make $13.6 million next season. The Wizards were eager to shed his salary and get younger in the frontcourt.
In 82 games in 2017-18, Gortat averaged 8.4 points and 7.6 rebounds, shooting 51.8 percent from the field. It was his lowest scoring output since he joined the Wizards in 2013.
Gortat and point guard John Wall met privately in February after Wall took offense to a tweet Gortat sent out. The meeting, which didn’t last long, facilitated the airing of grievances, but sources say there was still more work to be done to fully repair that relationship.
