Former NBA guard Jorge Gutierrez is returning to the city where he partially established his basketball name — Canton, Ohio.
After some time away, Gutierrez was brought back by the Charge on Thursday, GM Mike Gansey said. Gutierrez is a 6-foot-3 point guard. He served stints in the NBA with the Nets and Bucks. Both times he was called up via Canton.
“Jorge is a point guard with proven NBA talent that is going to help us on both ends of the floor,” Gansey said. “We are excited to have him and his leadership back in Canton to help our team.”
To make room for Gutierrez, the Charge waived guard Antonio Barton.
Gutierrez has played in 100 career games in Canton over three seasons, compiling career averages of 12.1 points on 45 percent shooting with 5.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists. He was twice named first team All-Defense in the D-League.
The Charge return to action Friday vs. the Iowa Energy. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Canton Memorial Civic Center.
