Lakers coaching update: Lue, Williams, Howard

Tyronn Lue coached current Lakers star when the two were together with the Cavaliers.

Coaching candidate Tyronn Lue’s interview with the Los Angeles Lakers took place Friday in Southern California, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The Lakers have already interviewed Philadelphia 76ers assistant Monty Williams, and per Wojnarowski, intend to interview Williams a second time.

Also, as has been reported by multiple outlets, the Lakers will interview Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard, a former teammate of Lakers star LeBron James. (Howard is also interviewing for the Cleveland Cavaliers’ coaching vacancy.)

All candidates are meeting with Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka. It is still not known whether the Lakers intend to replace former team president Magic Johnson, who stepped down on the final night of the regular season.

According to reports, both Lue and Williams have been warned against taking the Lakers coaching job.

The Lakers have missed the playoffs a franchise-record six straight times.

Lue led James and the Cavaliers to the Finals three straight times, winning the championship in 2016. Lue was fired after an 0-6 start this season. He was an assistant under David Blatt when the Cavs reached the Finals in 2015.

  1. Interesting how Rob Pelinka’s reputation flares up everywhere he goes. However, It’s not stopped him from getting paid!
