Lue reaches deal to be Rivers’ top assistant with Clippers

Former Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue apparently is on his way back to the Clippers.

Former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue has reached an agreement to become the associate head coach under Doc Rivers with the Los Angeles Clippers, according to Andrew Greif of the LA Times.

Lue was Rivers’ assistant with the Clippers before becoming the Cavs’ top assistant under David Blatt in 2014. Lue then took over for Blatt in the middle of the 2015-16 season, guiding the Cavs to the first championship in franchise history.

Lue, 42, interviewed and was considered the frontrunner for the rival Los Angeles Lakers earlier in the offseason, but a deal could not be reached. He also was reportedly pursued by the New Orleans Pelicans and Houston Rockets for an assistant role.

He led the Cavs to three straight Finals appearances, but was fired after an 0-6 start last season. He compiled a 128-83 record overall.

The Clippers are beginning a new era following the free agent addition of Kawhi Leonard and a trade for Paul George.
