Magic apply to have Movgov’s salary removed from cap

The salary of Timofey Mozgov still counts toward the Magic's salary cap.

The Orlando Magic have applied to have center Timofey Mozgov’s salary removed from their cap, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times.

Mozgov, 33, is on the Magic’s books for $16.7 million in each of the next two seasons. He last played in the NBA in the 2017-18 season, when he appeared in 33 games for the Brooklyn Nets.

He was waived by the Magic on July 6 before playing a game because of a knee injury. Mozgov has since signed a deal to play for Khimki in Russia.

The Magic are just $1.9 million below the hard cap and are therefore carrying just 13 players. Losing Movgov’s salary will give them an opportunity to add some bodies.
