Mavs’ Doncic won’t play in Summer League

Luka Doncic was drafted by the Mavericks with the third overall pick.

Dallas Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic will not play in Summer League, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

The Mavs don’t want to overwork Doncic in the wake of a long EuroLeague season that ended in late June.

Doncic is currently in Slovenia with Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle. The two are laying the groundwork to what they hope is a long, healthy relationship.

The 19-year old has played in over 150 games over the past two years. The Mavs traded up to the third pick to select Doncic. The Atlanta Hawks took Oklahoma’s Trae Young with the fifth pick.

“He needs a break,” Carlisle said after drafting Doncic. “We’ve got to prepare him for the long haul.”

Doncic was the EuroLeague MVP. He averaged 14.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists for Real Madrid.
