Speights, Magic nearing vet minimum deal

Marreese Speights is looking for a team and could offer the Magic some outside shooting.

Free agent center/power forward Marreese Speights is closing in on a contract agreement with the Orlando Magic, according to a report from international basketball journalist David Pick.

The deal will be for the veteran’s minimum, Pick reports.

Speights played with the Los Angeles Clippers last season and was considered one of the top shooting big men remaining in free agency.

Per Hoops Rumors: “Orlando, which has been looking for shooting help, could benefit from the addition of the 6’10” veteran, who played all 82 games with the Clippers last season. He shot 37% from 3-point range while averaging 8.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per night.”

Speights met with the Atlanta Hawks last month, but those talks broke off. He has also spent time with the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and Memphis Grizzlies.

Along with the Magic, the Sixers are said to be interested, and there is a possibility Speights could meet again with the Hawks. The Clippers are also interested in bringing him back.

Speights, 29, opted out of his contract with the team following the season.
