Former Arizona center DeAndre Ayton worked out for the Phoenix Suns and will spend Wednesday evening with the team watching Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
The Suns have the first overall pick in the June 21 draft.
“I know I’m going No. 1,” Ayton told reporters in Phoenix, via the Arizona Republic.
Ayton is not working out for any other teams.
“I’m the best competitor in this draft. I wouldn’t say I’m the best player. The best competitor,” Ayton said. “I don’t think there‘s anybody like me. I give my heart on both ends of the floor.”
Ayton is a 7-footer and hails from the Bahamas. He is well-spoken, extremely athletic and can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket. He is an accomplished shot-blocker as well.
Ayton will likely be capable of shifting between power forward and center like so many of today’s NBA big men.
If he is indeed drafted by the Suns, he will team with dynamic shooting guard Devin Booker.
“That’s Shaq and Kobe 2.0,” Ayton predicted.
General manager Ryan McDonough said the Suns are looking for a center to anchor the team at both ends of the floor.
‘We think DeAndre has that kind of potential,” McDonough said.
