The NBA pre-draft combine could be held in Orlando, Las Vegas or its original spot of Chicago, sources told veteran basketball journalist Adam Zagoria for ZagsBlog.
Along with the draft lottery, the NBA postponed the combine last month. The lottery was originally scheduled for Tuesday (May 19), with the combine set for May 21-24 in its usual location of Chicago. But because of circumstances surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, it could find a new temporary home.
The draft is scheduled for June 25, but the league is expected to officially postpone that too — with executives around the league reportedly pushing to hold it sometime in late August or September. Last week, the NBA and NCAA agreed to postpone the June 3 withdraw date for early-entry draft candidates.
Marc Berman of the New York Post was among those reporting that sources “are hearing about” the possibility of moving the draft to late August or early September.
“Some agents are being told there could be a draft combine on a very small scale in August — with live interviews,” Berman wrote. “That’s music to NBA executives’ ears as they try to decipher an already muddled draft that experts believe doesn’t contain one guaranteed star.”
As for teams requesting that the draft be held in the late summer/early fall … it only makes sense, given that the league isn’t even sure if the season can resume.
“Teams can’t do workouts with (draft prospects),” ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski recently said. “They can’t meet them in person. They can’t bring them in for workouts. They can’t travel to see them play. And teams can’t conduct physicals and have medical personnel evaluate players. That’s an important part of the draft process.”
One NBA executive told Zagoria the draft could be held virtually, just as the NFL did last month.
