Report: Anthony has begun to engage Knicks teammates

Carmelo Anthony has engaged with his Knicks teammates as the start of training camp nears.

It is becoming more and more likely that Carmelo Anthony will begin the season as a member of the New York Knicks, as multiple reports have stated trade talks between the Knicks and Houston Rockets have stalled significantly.

ESPN reported last week that the Knicks are “not close” in any trade involving Anthony — and while New York’s brass continues to have dialogue with the Rockets, the two sides are still at an impasse.

Anthony has been set on joining his pal Chris Paul and 2017 MVP runner-up James Harden in Houston for months. Back in July, the Rockets and Knicks were said to be “at the two-yard line” of a Melo trade, but a third team was needed to take on the contract of Ryan Anderson (three-year, $60M), and apparently no general manager in the league is willing to do that.

NBA reporter David Pick is now reporting Anthony has begun to speak with his teammates on the Knicks, sending texts of encouragement to his European pals Kristaps Porzingis, Willy Hernangómez and Mindaugas Kuzminskas.

ESPN added that the Knicks have told people around the league Houston doesn’t have anything that appeals to them. New York’s front office remains adamant on getting some combination of a young player, draft pick or expiring contract in return for Anthony.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers and Milwaukee Bucks all expressed interest in Anthony earlier this summer, but it appears any such conversations are no longer taking place.
