The relationship between Chris Paul and Doc Divers began to deteriorate after Rivers decided not to trade for Knicks star Carmelo Anthony in a deal that would have included Rivers’ son Austin, according to a report by ESPN.
Paul and multiple members of the Clippers felt Rivers didn’t treat his son, Austin Rivers, the same as he did the rest of the players. Paul and Rivers had a strong rapport when Rivers was initially hired, but the two began to drift apart after Rivers didn’t pull the trigger on a trade for Carmelo Anthony, according to the report.
One league executive told ESPN, “Chris despises Doc.”
Paul has since been traded to the Houston Rockets (full report here) and will now join James Harden to form a lethal backcourt. What happens with Rivers and the Clippers, however, remains to be determined.
