Report: Cavs seek Brown, Tatum from Celtics

Jaylen Brown (concussion) is just one of six Boston players who are dealing with injuries entering Wednesday's game against Washington at TD Garden.

The Cleveland Cavaliers will ask for Boston Celtics second-year forward Jaylen Brown or rookie forward Jayson Tatum as part of the ongoing trade talks centered on All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, according to a new report from ESPN.

Boston has already offered point guard Isaiah Thomas, forward Jae Crowder, rookie center Ante Zizic and Brooklyn’s 2018 pick in return. However, a hip injury suffered by Thomas in May is apparently worse than the Cavs initially suspected.

The Cavs and Celtics are now revisiting talks in an effort to complete the trade.

“Now, Cleveland is going to try to inquire about a couple of the Celtics’ young players, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, who they tried to get in the original trade, that is very unlikely,” NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski said during an appearance on SportsCenter. “But Boston still has a war chest of future first-round picks of their own, and some picks they control from other teams, and Cleveland is going to try to get one more of those to finalize this deal.”

As reported on Amico Hoops, the Cavs’ preference is to find a satisfactory conclusion to the deal, but will veto the trade if it’s not tweaked to their liking.

“Boston is resisting, and will initially at least, resist this idea,” Wojnarowski said. “Boston believes that it was completely transparent with Cleveland about where Thomas was physically, his rehab. Cleveland’s version of this is that they didn’t realize how long Thomas could potentially be out this season, he’s in the final year of his contract, and obviously, that matches up with what will likely be the final year of LeBron James’ current deal, and so there’s going to be a showdown between these two teams that may last a couple more days.”

In the event talks break off, the Cavs and Celtics will continue to seek trades centered on Irving and Thomas, respectively, sources told Amico Hoops.

Brown averaged 6.6 points and 2.8 rebounds in his first season. Tatum was drafted by the Celtics with the third overall pick in June.

  1. I dare Ainge to say No to Tatum or Brown. A Cavs veto will leave the Celtics in shambles, without Kyrie Irving. I guarantee that both Thomas and Crowder immediately demand a trade out of Boston after the trade is voided. Good luck trying to trade an injured player with only 1 year left on his contract. An injured hip rental is not going to get you an all-star back in return.

    • I was against this deal from the very beginning. I did not want Thomas here even if he was 100% healthy. We would have been even worse off defensively than we were last year, and that’s pretty damn god-awful. I honestly want no part of Thomas in this deal. A fair deal would have been (Tatum, Brown and the Nets pick) that is all. We asked for that in the beginning. We never asked for Thomas, Crowder or Zizic. Celtics offering us their garbage. They figured that they will no longer need Thomas if they get Kyrie, plus it will be “convenient” for them since they most likely did not want to pay I.T. a max deal. it is also very “convenient” for them to include Crowder in the deal because they just drafted both Tatum and Brown, who clearly will take minutes away from Crowder. Ainge thinks he’s slick. F##k that dude. Veto this trade and let’s deal with another team. Either we get Tatum or Brown, or the C’s can go f##k themselves!

    • I personally wouldn’t expect Taytum or Brown to be in the deal, I’d say it’s more of a first offer to get a counter offer and negotiate from there. If one of them were to be in the trade I’d be shocked if the BKN pick wasn’t taken out and replaced with a lesser pick (Clippers or Boston pick). But, at the end of the day, I’m just a fan sitting at home reading for a good chunk of my basketball news, so I could be completely wrong.

  2. Here’s a thought! Take Terry Rozier as that additional asset. Why? 1.) It weakens the already decimated defensive ability of Boston after they’ve lost Bradley & Crowder along with Johnson. 2.) It improves the Cavs on-ball defense against PG and quick SG allowing Cavs insurance. Terry can play off the ball with Derrick Rose.
    (Note: Boston has lost: 6 of their Top 8 RPG / SPG and 5 of their Top 7 BPG to go with 8 of their Top 10 3pt shooters)
    With this additional asset, now trade the package of the Cavs 2018 1st with Shumpert / Frye / Osman / Jefferson and non-guaranteed fillers (Felder & Tavares) to Clippers & Bucks.
    Clippers get Shumpert & Tavares (Improve the SG Starters/Depth & Defense)
    Bucks get Cavs 2018 1st with Austin Rivers, Frye, Osman, Jefferson & Felder (Get out from the Henson contract, 1st round pick and roster flexibility with Rivers who could start @ PG, Frye and his shooting & Osman & Jefferson plus the veteran leadership help for Jason Kidd. They also need to re-sign Jabari Parker but sitting at $91M in salary currently for 2018)
    Cavs get Khris Middleton and John Henson along with an additional roster slot IF Wade becomes available. (Keep Nets pick. Improve long term IF LeBron leaves with Middleton and Nets Pick while improving defensively with Henson (blocks), Rozier (quickness), Middleton (Length) to go with Crowder & Thompson.
    PG = Thomas / Rose / Calderon
    SG = JR / Wade(?) / Rozier
    SF = LeBron / Middleton / Korver
    PF = Love / Crowder / Green
    C = Thompson / Henson / Zizec
