Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters is expected to undergo season-ending surgery on his left ankle, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.
Waiters received a second opinion on the ankle after receiving similar news the first time — that the injury would require surgery and likely end his year.
Waiters, 26, has been out since Dec. 22. He is averaging 14.3 points and 3.8 assists in 30 games.
He suffered a sprain of the same ankle last season, costing him 13 games — but he opted not to have surgery. He signed a four-year deal with the Heat reportedly worth $52 million in July.
With Waiters out, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra will likely continue to rely on Josh Richardson, Wayne Ellington and Tyler Johnson in the backcourt alongside Goran Dragic. Once again, the Heat are a potential playoff team.
The Heat have also been active in exploring trades ahead of the Feb. 8 deadline.
