Free agent center/forward Emeka Okafor has signed to a training camp contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, the team announced on its website.
Okafor, 34, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2004 draft (Charlotte), taken one selection after Dwight Howard.
Okafor is 6-foot-10 and last played in the NBA during the 2011-12 season with the Washington Wizards.
He averaged 9.7 points and 8.8 rebounds that season — but was sidelined with back and neck injuries.
“He’s been working hard rehabbing,” Okafor’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, said in a recent interview with ESPN. “For some guys that means one thing. To Emeka, who understands his body as well or better than some trainers that have worked with him, it means something else. He’s healthy. He feels great, but he’s a perfectionist, and he wants everything to be right.”
Okafor is a distant cousin of Jahlil Okafor, another big man on the Sixers’ roster.
