Bulls’ Markkanen injured in FIBA play

Bulls rookie big man Lauri Markkanen was selected with the No. 7 overall draft pick.

Chicago Bulls rookie Lauri Markkanen suffered what is believed to be a right leg injury Saturday while playing in the FIBA Eurobasket tournament for Finland.

Markkanen, who was the seventh overall pick in the 2017 draft out of Arizona, injured himself while attempting to hit a game-tying 3-pointer and needed assistance getting back to the locker room.

The Bulls have to hope this is not a serious injury to a player they are counting on to be a star for them in the future.

Markkanen is the leader of Chicago’s new rebuild project and the 7-footer was showing glimpses of his immense talent, as he averaged 23.0 points per game in the two games in which he played.

Markkanen was drafted seventh overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves, but traded to Chicago as part of the Jimmy Butler deal.
