James to sit out Cavs’ free scrimmage

LeBron James will not play in the Cavaliers' annual Wine & Gold scrimmage.

LeBron James will not participate in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Wine & Gold scrimmage scheduled for Monday at Quicken Loans Arena, coach Tyronn Lue told reporters.

James rolled his left ankle during a practice session Wednesday evening. While the injury isn’t considered serious, Lue said James is continuing to receive treatment and rest.

The Cavs open the preseason Tuesday night at The Q against the Atlanta Hawks *(7 p.m., NBA TV). Lue did not say if James will play.

The scrimmage is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. EST and is open to the public. It will also be streamed at Cavs.com/live.

James, 32, has appeared in seven straight Finals, winning three championships, including one with the Cavs in 2016.

  1. At least it doesn’t seem that he will miss the entire preseason like Khawai Lenoard.

  2. I’m interested in some lineups I’ve been hearing about. This one really intrigues me:
    Rose at the 1
    Wade at the 2
    LeBron at the 3
    Crowder at the 4
    Love at the 5
That gives you at least 2 3-point shooters in Crowder and Love and provides spacing for LeBron, Wade and Rose to drive to the hoop.
