This year’s No. 1 overall draft pick is in training camp with last year’s No. 1 overall pick.
And this year’s top pick, point guard Markelle Fultz, and last year’s, forward Ben Simmons, are both members of the Philadelphia 76ers and entering the NBA for the first time — as Simmons missed all of last season with a foot injury.
Now, they occasionally go head-t0-head, as Sixers coach Brett Brown has said the 6-foot-10 Simmons will sometimes run the offense, too.
“We want to push each other every day in practice,” Fultz said, via CSN Philly. “In the (public) scrimmage we went at each other, just to show the crowd we’re having fun and we’re gonna compete.
“Not only that, but we’re gonna make each other better. That is what the team is going to need from us — pushing the ball, being competitive.”
Brown has said the Sixers’ goal is to make the playoffs, and with the likes of Simmons, Fultz, big man Joel Embiid and veteran shooting guard J.J. Redick …. well, maybe this is the year.
There’s a long way to go, but finally in Philly, there appears to be hope.
