Contrary to report, Grizzlies not likely to sign Rivers

Former Wizards point guard Austin Rivers appears to be on his way to the Grizzlies.

Contrary to a report from The Athletic, the Memphis Grizzlies are unlikely to sign recently waived guard Austin Rivers, according to Chris Herrington of the Daily Memphian.

”A source with knowledge of the negotiation tells The Daily Memphian that while the Grizzlies considered the matter, the team is not signing Rivers,” Herrington reported.

Rivers was traded from the Washington Wizards to the Phoenix Suns (along with forward Kelly Oubre) on Monday and the Suns agreed to part ways so he could join a playoff contender.

Phoenix officially waived Rivers on Tuesday.

The Grizzlies already have two points guards backing up starter Mike Conley Jr.Shelvin Mack and rookie Jevon Carter.

Rivers, 26, is averaging 7.2 points and 2.6 rebounds. He appeared to be taken aback by the Wizards’ decision to trade him after the deal was first reported. The Wizards received veteran forward Trevor Ariza in the deal.

“This kind of hit me as a surprise,” Rivers said, via Candace Buckner of The Washington Post. “We got 54 games left. I thought we had some more time to get this going together, but you know, they want to go in a different direction apparently.”
