Apparently, the Orlando Magic are aiming big in their coaching search, with Michigan State coach Tom Izzo now on their radar.
That comes from Michael Scotto of The Athletic, who reported the Magic have “expressed interest” in Izzo.
Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman has refused comment on the search, only to say that it will indeed be thorough. Former Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford, University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson and San Antonio Spurs assistant Ime Udoka have all been linked to the opening.
Izzo, 63, will not be an easy get. He turned away the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010 and has a good thing going at Michigan State, where he has been head coach since 1995.
He is a native of Michigan and has only coached in that state, beginning with Ishpeming High School in 1977. He has also been an assistant at Northern Michigan and with the Spartans (1983-95).
“The process has been, I think, deliberate and thorough,” Weltman told the Orlando Sentinel, “and we’re very pleased with some of the guys that we’ve interviewed, and we continue to move forward.”
