Trading away DeMarcus Cousins doesn’t mean the Sacramento Kings are finished making moves. In fact, they might just be getting started.
For starters, they need to figure out what to do with the newcomers from New Orleans — Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans and Langston Galloway.
The Kings will keep Hield, a rookie combo guard. But the statuses of Evans and Galloway appear to be up in the air.
Also, several reports say the Kings will waive veteran small forward Matt Barnes. Older players such as Barnes are no longer needed in what clearly has become a rebuild and gutting of the roster.
Per Yahoo Sports: “Sacramento is determined to restock the franchise with assets, and will be targeting rookie-deal players and draft picks in the coming days, sources told The Vertical. Free agents-to-be Ben McLemore and Darren Collison are available, sources said, as is Arron Afflalo, a solid bench scorer with a manageable contract.”
In return, the Kings are hoping for more young players and especially, draft picks. No word yet if they’ll make a run at available Philadelphia center Jahlil Okafor.

Yahoo Sports added: “It’s a full-scale rebuild now in Sacramento, and the pressure on Vlade Divac has never been stronger. League-wide Divac is viewed as a keen basketball mind, but his inexperience has been costly. He mishandled the George Karl situation last season, his pair of first-rounders this year — Georgios Papagiannis and Skal Labissiere — have not shown much, and his emphatic support of Cousins weeks before trading him did not go unnoticed by the player agents he will have to deal with.”
The NBA trade deadline is Thursday at 3 p.m. EST (or noon, Sacramento time).
So what’s the next move for the Kings? It’s hard to tell. But according to insiders league-wide, at least one more move is on the way.
Source familiar w/ Kings’ thinking: “Vivek thinks Buddy [Hield] has Steph Curry potential.” Am told that fixation was a key driver in deal.
