Raptors interview Spurs assistants Messina, Udoka

Ime Udoka has been an assistant for Gregg Popovich and the Spurs since 2012.

The Toronto Raptors have interviewed San Antonio Spurs assistants Ettorre Messina and Ime Udoka for their head-coaching opening, according to ESPN.

Per the report, Messina interviewed Thursday and Udoka did the same Friday. The Raptors have also reportedly interviewed former NBA standout Jerry Stackhouse, the head coach of Toronto’s G-League affiliate in each of the past two seasons, as well their own assistants, Nick Nurse and Rex Kalamian.

Both Messina and Udoka interviewed with the Charlotte Hornets — a position that has since been filled by James Borrego, another assistant on the staff of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich last season.

Udoka is also believed to be a candidate for the Orlando Magic’s coaching vacancy.

“Messina and Udoka each spent full days meeting with Raptors president Masai Ujiri and his staff,” ESPN reported.

The Raptors fired former coach Dwane Casey after the season. Casey is believed to be a strong candidate for the Detroit Pistons’ coaching job.
