NBA Season Preview: Miami Heat

Erik Spoelstra and Hassan Whiteside will try to keep the Heat relevant in the face of change.

Camp Location: Atlantis Resort, Bahamas.

Coach: Erik Spoelstra, eight years, 399-241 overall.

Last Season: 48-34, lost to Toroto in second round of playoffs.

Key Returnees: Hassan Whiteside, Goran Dragic, Udonis Haslem, Tyler Johnson, Josh McRoberts, Josh Richardson, Briante Weber, Justise Winslow, Beno Udrih.

Key Additions: Dion Waiters (Oklahoma City), James Johnson (Toronto), Derrick Williams (New York), Luke Babbitt (New Orleans), Wayne Ellington (Brooklyn), Keith Benson (D-League), Stefan Jankovic (Hawaii), Rodney McGruder (D-League), Willie Reed (Brooklyn).

Key Losses: Dwyane Wade (Chicago), Chris Bosh (in limbo), Luol Deng (LA Lakers), Gerald Green (Boston), Joe Johnson (Utah), Amare Stoudemire (Israel), Dorell Wright (LA Clippers).

Outlook: The drama surrounding Chris Bosh and his health issues is merely deflecting attention away from the Heat’s new reality. Namely, they aren’t very good. That’s not to say the Heat will totally stink. Coach Erik Spoelstra is a proven strategist and respected by the players. And the likes of Hassan Whiteside and Justise Winslow offer plenty of promise. And who knows? Maybe this is where Dion Waiters can finally thrive. Still, there are lots of question marks, and with all the newness, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if there are some chemistry issues early. And yeah, maybe later, too.
