Pistons’ Drummond has lost 20 pounds this summer

Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond has lost approximately 20 pounds this summer, lowering his weight to 285 pounds.

The Pistons hired former Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey and are going to be playing at a faster tempo.

Drummond credits changes to his lifestyle as the main reason he’s gotten into better shape.

“I think for me, it’s just finding something that works for me,” Drummond told Tim Bontemps of the Washington Post. “In the previous years, it was kind of feeling it out to get my body in tiptop shape. Last year was the first year I really found what it took to get my body to where it needed to be and that’s a plan I’ve stuck with.”

In 78 games this past season, Drummond averaged 15.0 points and 16.0 rebounds while shooting 52.9 percent from the field. He also shot a career-high 60.5 percent from the free-throw line.

The Pistons acquired All-Star forward Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers at the February trade deadline. In 25 games with the Pistons, Griffin averaged 19.8 points and 6.6 rebounds, shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from three.

Detroit was expected to make a playoff push in the Eastern Conference after trading for Griffin, but that never transpired. Injuries did play a role, as Griffin, Drummond and guard Reggie Jackson were only in the lineup together for a mere four games.

Now that LeBron James is out West, the Pistons should contend for a playoff spot in what figures to be a wide-open race in the East.

“I think our direction is great,” Drummond said. “Adding Dwane Casey as coach, having Blake and Reggie Jackson come back healthy, myself coming back healthy and in shape, just overall really, really excited for the upcoming season and just the new start and the new team.

“Blake and I have done a great job of being in constant communication and getting a chance to be on the court together as much as possible to figure out what each other likes. So whenever we are with each other, it’s really just trying to figure each other out.”
