The Phoenix Suns have emerged as a potential third team in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ trade talks centered on Jimmy Butler, according to a report from ESPN.
The Suns are seeking a starting-caliber point guard and general manager Ryan McDonough has made it clear they will trade for one if necessary.
“We’re evaluating options,” McDonough told ArizonaSports 98.7 FM. “We’re trying to be deliberate and strategic, and just make sure it makes sense — if we are to do a deal — in the short- and long-term.”
Meanwhile, Butler reportedly told the Timberwolves he prefers to be traded to the Miami Heat. In that scenario, per ESPN, the Heat could trade point guard Goran Dragic to the Timberwolves, “and make Wolves point guard Jeff Teague available for the Suns.”
The Suns also have Timberwolves backup point guard Tyus Jones on their radar, ESPN reported.
Along with Teague and Jones, the Suns reportedly have expressed interest in the Los Angeles Clippers’ Patrick Beverley, the Indiana Pacers’ Cory Joseph and the Boston Celtics’ Terry Rozier, among others.
The Clippers supposedly were seeking a first-round draft pick from the Suns for Beverley. But according to one report, the Suns so far are only willing to offer second-round picks in trade discussions.
