Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons spoke to LeBron James before James decided to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, but the 2018 Rookie of the Year had a hunch James was taking his talents to LA.
“I spoke to him before he actually decided, but I just had a feeling that he’d already picked so it was kinda funny,” Simmons told NBA Australia’s James McKern. “I was reaching out to him, but I already knew.”
James signed a four-year, $153.5 million free-agent deal with the Lakers. At the opening of his I PROMISE school in Akron, Ohio, James admitted that the Sixers were one of three teams, along with the Lakers and Houston Rockets, he strongly considered signing with following his second stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Simmons and James are both repped by agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group, so some thought the Sixers had the upper hand in the James sweepstakes.
That turned out not to be the case, as James was adamant on signing with the Lakers. The four-time MVP is excited about the challenge of getting the Lakers back to prominence.
