Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon will become a restricted free agent this summer, and according to a report from Sporting News, the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks are expected to pursue the high-flyer.
Gordon is having his best season as a pro this year for the Magic. The 22-year-old is averaging 18.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists, while shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from beyond the arc.
As a restricted free agent, Gordon is free to sign offer sheets with any team. The Magic then have to decide if they want to match the offer or not.
“League sources told Sporting News this week that the Suns are expected to be suitors for Gordon, who starred at Arizona for one memorable season. Phoenix has ample cap room and a roster in need of more proven players. Another team with interest in Gordon, according to sources, would be the rebuilding Mavericks, who have been eager to find a budding star to fill in alongside Harrison Barnes and Dennis Smith Jr., softening the blow of Dirk Nowitzki’s retirement, which could come in just months.”
The Magic did quietly explore the trade market for Gordon at the trade deadline, but nothing ever materialized.
