Timberwolves to hire Blazers’ Vanterpool as lead assistant

Trail Blazers assistant David Vanterpool, right, reportedly is leaving for a position with the Timberwolves.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are adding David Vanterpool as associate head coach under Ryan Saunders, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Vanterpool has been an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers since 2013 and interviewed for several head-coaching vacancies both last offseason and this.

According to Wojnarowski, he will serve as Saunders’ defensive specialist.

“Vanterpool spent seven years with Blazers, playing a prominent part in growth of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum,” Wojnarowski wrote.

The Timberwolves are under new management, led by recently hired head of basketball operations Gersson Rosas.

Vanterpool reportedly interviewed for the Timberwolves’ head-coaching spot in early May. He also had spoken with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns, with each team choosing to go in another direction.
