NBA Season Preview: Orlando Magic

Magic guard Elfrid Payton may be counted on more than ever this season.

ORLANDO MAGIC

Camp Location: Amway Center, Orlando

Coach: Frank Vogel, six years (first with Magic); 250-181 overall

Last Season: 35-47, did not make playoffs.

Key Returnees: Elfrid Payton, Nikola Vucevic, Evan Fournier, Aaron Gordon, Mario Hezonja, CJ Watson.

Key Additions: Serge Ibaka (Oklahoma City), Bismack Biyombo (Toronto), Jeff Green (LA Clippers), DJ Augustin (Denver), Branden Dawson (LA Clippers), Nick Johnson (Austin Spurs), Jodie Meeks (Detroit), Damjan Rudez (Minnesota), CJ Wilcox (LA Clippers), Stephen Zimmerman (rookie, Nevada-Las Vegas), Cliff Alexander (Portland).

Key Losses: Victor Oladipo (Oklahoma City), Ersan Ilyasova (Oklahoma City), Brandon Jennings (New York), Shabazz Napier (Portland), Andrew Nicholson (Washington), Jason Smith (Washington), Dewayne Dedmon (San Antonio).

Outlook: New coach, new bodies, no more Victor Oladipo and the same old questions. Namely, who’s the man you turn to at crunch time? Nikola Vucevic can sometimes maybe be that guy. Same goes for Elfrid Payton. Or how about Evan Fournier, or newcomer Serge Ibaka? These questions and more are what must be decided by Frank Vogel, who arrives after six mostly successful seasons in Indiana. Vogel’s Pacers scrapped and clawed and defended. And these Magic could rattle some cages if they do the same. Offensively, though, it may be more of the same.
