Vecsey: Classic hoop tales from the days of yore

Former Pistons point guard Isiah Thomas was a big fan of legend Walt Frazier.

NEW YORK — What I miss most about covering the NBA are the stories and quotes I was privy to while hanging out on the road at all hours with just about every team/player in the league. Below are some of my favorites; many more where they came from, if you like them.

When Isiah Thomas was growing up poor in the Windy City, he and his friends used to hang tough after a Bulls game in the freezing cold, and wait for the cleanup crew to deposit the leftover popcorn in the dumpster outside Chicago Stadium.

“That might be all we’d eat that night,” he told me early in his Pistons’ career.
