The Washington Wizards are signing free-agent point guard Gary Payton II to a 10-day contract, according to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated.
Payton, 26, is expected to sign Monday.
He has spent time with the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks after going undrafted in 2016. He has most recently been playing for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the G-League.
The Wizards have an open roster spot and as Candace Buckner of The Washington Post reported, were more likely to sign someone to a 10-day deal than convert the two-way contract of Jordan McCrae — who is averaging 29.5 points for their G-League franchise.
“The Wizards, meanwhile, must add a player by Monday to meet the NBA roster minimum of 14,” Buckner reported. “But instead of converting McRae’s contract — two-way deals don’t count toward the NBA roster minimum — and signing him for the rest of the season, Washington is expected to sign a free agent to a 10-day contract, according to a person familiar with the team’s plans.”
