Woj: Spurs talking Kawhi deals, including with Celtics, Lakers

The Kawhi Leonard saga is amping us as teams attempt to get their ducks in order to make their best pitches to the San Antonio Spurs to deal for their disgruntled superstar.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Spurs are very active in talks about Leonard, a two-time first-team All-NBA performer who played only nine games last season because of a right quadriceps injury.

“The Spurs are fully engaged in trade talks with several teams on Kawhi Leonard, including the Lakers and Celtics, league sources tell ESPN,” Wojnarowski said. “Boston has long had the assets that the Spurs most covet in a potential Leonard trade.”

Multiple league sources and reports have suggested the Cavaliers have also engaged the Spurs in trade talks regarding Leonard.

Wojnarowski reports the Lakers are willing to include former No. 2 pick Brandon Ingram and a future first-round pick in a package for Leonard, but the Spurs are seeking a far more complete haul of Lakers young players and future picks, league sources said.

The report says the Spurs are not on high alert to get a deal for Leonard done.

“The Spurs can still play long game with Leonard, try to repair (the) relationship) and get to a place where they’re comfortable offering (the) $219 super max,” he said. “The urgency to get a deal belongs to (the) Lakers now.

“But circumstances and leverage can change quickly.”

Wojnarowski also said the Celtics are being very cautious about breaking up their core of young guys to deal for Leonard.

“Boston’s extremely cautious on Leonard front. There’s so much uncertainty w/ Leonard’s future — health, free agent desires, etc.,” he said. “Will Leonard be same player? That’s hard to tell. Celtics don’t have to make a risky trade and have no intention to do so. It’s an interesting dance.”

Leonard will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2018-19 season.
