(CNN) – The United States has extended Covit-19 restrictions on essential land travel and ferry crossings Canada And Mexico until July 21, according to a Sunday tweet from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“To reduce the spread of # COVID19, the United States is expanding restrictions on non-essential travel on our land and extending boat crossings with Canada and Mexico until July 21, while ensuring access to essential trade and travel.”

“The DHS has seen positive developments in recent weeks and will identify conditions under which controls can be safely and consistently relieved, along with other U.S. companies on the White House’s professional task force, including Canada and Mexico.”

In March 2020, the United States and Canada agreed to close the border to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Canada continues with strict restrictions

Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparation Bill Blair announced on Friday that the country had extended the Govt-19 restrictions on non – essential U.S. and international travel until July 21.

Speaking to the media after the announcement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted that extending travel restrictions would be “disgusting” to many, but their goal was to keep Canadians safe.

“We have not yet come out of this epidemic. We need to achieve our goals of being 75% vaccinated with the first dose and at least 20% vaccinated with the second dose because before we start relaxing things, even someone who has been fully vaccinated can send COVID-19 to someone who has not been vaccinated, ”Trudeau said.

Blair said the government would soon announce how it plans to handle the trip among those who have been fully vaccinated.

Canada is mostly unlimited for US travelers. Travel, leisure and informal visits are prohibited. There are some exceptions for family members, foreign workers and international students.

Strict screening and isolation measures have been put in place for passengers arriving by air and land.

Those arriving by plane must be isolated for three nights at a government-licensed hotel, in addition to testing and segregation requirements.

Mexico allows US travelers to arrive by air. Covit-19 does not require running a negative PCR test and does not require isolation. However, most resorts ask guests to complete health questionnaires.

On June 7, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention downgraded Mexico’s advisory rating from “highest” risk level 4 to “high” risk level 3. The CDC advises travelers to be fully vaccinated before heading to Mexico.
