(CNN) –– Comedian and actor Richard Lewis, whose humor and biting wit delighted audiences for decades in shows like “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Anything But Love,” has died, his publicist Jeff Abraham said. He is 76 years old.

In an email to CNN, Abraham said the artist died “peacefully” at his Los Angeles home Tuesday night of a heart attack.

In April 2023, Richard revealed that he was living with Parkinson's disease.

Known as a comedian's comedian, Lewis made his debut on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” in 1974, becoming a staple of the late-night comedy scene.

On screen, Lewis has starred alongside friend Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” for years, and at one point this season joked which of them was the worst.

As his career blossomed with cable specials in the 1980s, Lewis also moved into acting roles, starring in the comedy “Anything But Love” with Jamie Lee Curtis and Prince John in the Mel Brooks film comedy “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.” and in the 1995 film “The Drunkards” where he plays a struggling alcoholic.

In a statement, a spokesperson for HBO (which, like CNN, is a division of Warner Bros. Discovery), said, “Lewis' genius, intelligence and comedic talent are unmatched.”

“Richard will always be a beloved member of the HBO and 'Curb Your Excitement' families, and our deepest condolences to his family, friends and all the fans who could count on Richard to brighten their days with laughter,” the statement read.

Lewis' representative, Joyce Lapinski, the comedian's wife, said: “I would like to thank everyone for their love, friendship and support and ask for privacy at this time.”
