A full party is expected in Detroit to bid farewell to Miguel Cabrera
Venezuelan sensation Miguel Cabrera’s final week as a major league player is coming to a close, including a “Miggy Appreciation Weekend” for the final series of the season against Cleveland.
The festivities will begin on Friday at 6:40 PM ET against the Guardians. Pre-match festivities will focus on Miggy “The Person,” highlighting his Venezuelan roots, his connection with fans and his impact on the community. JK Simmons, a Michigan-born actor and Tigers fan, will narrate an introductory video before the game. A video will be shown honoring the recipients of the Cabrera Family Scholarship, as well as others who have benefited from the efforts of the Miguel Cabrera Foundation.
At Comerica Landing, there will be Venezuelan music and Latin food and drinks. All fans through the doors will receive a commemorative Miggy comic book celebrating his accomplishments. Instead of fireworks Friday night, the Tigers prepared their first postgame drone show, flying drones in formation to film some of the big moments and milestones in Cabrera’s career with audio and video support.
Saturday’s 1:10pm game is expected to be the highlight of the festivities in Cabrera’s tribute, which center around ‘The Player’ and his incredible accomplishments on the field of play. The first 15,000 fans will receive a “Miguel Cabrera Print-All-Over” T-shirt. The pregame ceremonies will include a series of guest speakers and video tributes, culminating in the presentation of gifts by the Tigers organization and Cabrera’s teammates in what will likely be an emotional display.
On Sunday at 3:10, the curtain will rise and all eyes will be on the final match and Cabrera’s farewell. All fans attending will receive a banner cheering for Miggy, which will be used as part of the celebrations.
There are still tickets available for Friday’s game and that day’s festivities, but seating is more limited for Saturday’s game. For the final game of the season on Sunday, only tickets remain. More than 100,000 fans are expected to be welcomed to Comerica Park during the series, something that has not happened since 2016.
The Tigers began the week on Tuesday with a series against the Royals that will conclude on Thursday at 1:10 p.m. The first 15,000 fans to attend Thursday’s match will receive a Meiji commemorative poster featuring an illustration of the gunner on a throne with a crown in front. Comerica Park, with a tiger next to it.
In addition to all the in-park festivities, a Miguel-themed dining experience featuring Venezuelan cuisine from El Rey de las Arepas, featuring some of Miguel’s favorite dishes, will be open all week at Woodward on W. Columbia Street. Miggy’s sample includes a mini arepa (chicken, beef, or vegetarian), sweet plantain, and mini cachapa.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the Miguel Cabrera Foundation, which supports youth, children and family sports and funds scholarships for first-generation college students in Detroit and Miami.
