Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey did a Q&A session with fans Saturday on Instagram for his team’s esports organization, Clutch Gaming, and said the Rockets are “in the mix” to sign Carmelo Anthony.
A fan asked Morey, “So we for sure getting Carmelo Anthony?” Morey responded by saying, “In the mix.” Another fan asked Morey, “Does Daryl still have something up his sleeve?” Morey shot back a “Yes.”
Anthony has been telling people for more than a week that he’ll ultimately wind up with the Rockets after he’s waived by the Atlanta Hawks, according to a report from David Aldridge of NBA.com. Chris Paul has been advocating the Rockets to sign his pal Anthony.
2018 MVP James Harden is also on board with adding Anthony to the squad.
“It would be a great acquisition for us,” Harden said. “Melo’s a proven vet. He just wants to win at this point, so it would be great for him to be on our team. The current roster we have now, we’ve got good guys back and we keep making forward progress.”
Anthony’s lone season in OKC was a disappointment. The veteran scorer averaged a career-low 16.2 points per game during the regular season and shot only 40.4 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from beyond the arc.
The playoffs were an even bigger struggle for Anthony. In the six-game series loss to the Utah Jazz, Anthony averaged 11.8 points while shooting a woeful 37.5 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Thunder had an offensive rating of 98.6 when Anthony was on the court compared to 116.8 when he was on the bench.
The Rockets can offer Anthony a starting spot after losing Trevor Ariza in free agency.
