Premier League 21/22 Season Preview for the Big Six
The Big Six of the Premier League are the most successful English clubs in the land. They comprise Man City, Man United, Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea. The new season will bring about a new storyline for each club, so let’s look at how things look for each of the six clubs.
Arsenal
The cannon badge will not feature in any European tournament in 2021. That is because Mikel Arteta’s first full season resulted in an 8th place finish. While it is easy to write them off, the only way for them to go from here is up. Smart recruitment will be very important for the Gunners to reinforce the squad ahead of the new season.
- A new center-back, a creative midfielder, and a new goalkeeper are on the transfer list for Arsenal.
- Talented youngsters like Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith-Rowe, Folarin Balogun, and Gabriel now need to step up take the team forward.
- They must also offload fringe players to optimize the squad. Since their only focus will be on domestic competition, they can hope to return to Europe in 2022.
Tottenham Hotspur
Nuno Espirito Santo is the long-term replacement for Jose Mourinho at Spurs. The former Wolves boss did a remarkable job with the midlands club and now has a much bigger task at hand. Spurs will be competing in the first-ever Europa Conference League and will be expected to win it. So, they could finally end their long wait for any kind of silverware with a European title victory.
The pressure is even higher because they are the biggest team in the competition. They must also handle the transfer situation of Harry Kane as best as they can to stabilize the squad. If they don’t keep him, they must invest in a new prolific striker along with a new center-back. Spurs already have a good team and must find a way to be consistent throughout the year.

Manchester United
The highlight of the summer for the Red Devils is their signing of Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho. The transfer has been a year in the making and has finally gone through. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also in the market for a first-team center-back this summer. Names like Raphael Varane, Pau Torres, and Joules Kounde have been strongly linked.
United suffered a rather disappointing end to the previous campaign, missing out on the Europa League title to Villareal. They also finished second in the Premier League and will surely be looking to end their quest for silverware this time around. With Sancho, they boast one of the most fearsome attacks in the country, and fans will now be looking for results. The Premier League and Champions League titles will undoubtedly be the main priority for them this time around.
Liverpool
Despite reaching unprecedented heights in recent years, Liverpool had a quiet 20/21 season. Injuries plagued their squad, and it is a miracle that Jurgen Klopp managed to lead the team to a fourth-place finish. Virgil Van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, and Joe Gomez are expected to return to the starting lineup following their battles with injuries.
Liverpool will be in the market for a new midfielder and a striker this summer, following the departures of Gini Wijnaldum and Divock Origi. Ibrahima Konate has already been recruited to bolster the defence, and the former Leipzig man will bring a lot of quality to the team. His presence will also force the other players to step up their game this year. The 19/20 title winners head into the campaign as the unlikely underdogs in the title race.
Now, if you want to put your money onto a player or a team, you need to know how they are faring. Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s team was hailed as the best in the land towards the back end of the 20/21 season. With the sheer amount of talent at their disposal, they head into the new campaign as the favourites to win the title again. Crucial players like Ruben Dias, Kevin De Bruyne, and Phil Foden will be crucial to their success this time as well.
Following the departure of Sergio Aguero, City are in the market for a new striker. Their first choice is Harry Kane from Tottenham. But, they will have to break the bank to fund a transfer for the England captain. The sum being demanded by Spurs is more than 120 million pounds and could be the most expensive deal in English history. Should the transfer go through, the Citizens will boast of an unstoppable attack.
Chelsea
The Champions of Europe head into the new campaign with their sights on the league title. Thomas Tuchel has done a remarkable job with the Blues since joining in January and will start his first full season in England come August. The squad is expected to undergo numerous changes this summer.
Chelsea is surely going to sign a number 9 this summer and could also arrange a move for a center-back. Club owner Roman Abramovich is reportedly working to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. The Roman oligarch is rarely denied a transfer that he wants, and the player could start next season in Chelsea blue if the move goes through. Other options are also on the list for Chelsea, but the Norwegian wunderkind is priority number 1. Click here to learn about Christian Eriksen’s sudden collapse in Euro 2020.
Consistency is the name of the game when it comes to football. It is very difficult to call a season accurately, and things can change dramatically throughout a season. The team with the best defence mostly wins the league title. So, even though attackers are the best-paid athletes on the team, their defensive counterparts deserve the credit for the big wins. The title race will be between Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United this upcoming term.
