It is a precious metal used in the manufacture of jewelry, tableware, and many other things: we refer to it silver. However, over time, this metal tends to darken, thus losing its natural luster. But fortunately, we have found a simple way through which you can restore the original shine. All this with something that is definitely within everyone’s reach: Aluminum foil.

These metal sheets are very flexible and can be bent to cover objects very easily. Its use is multiple, as it is used as a coating for electrical items, food, cosmetics and even chemical products. But now, we will teach you how to make your silver items shine again.

You will only need aluminum foil, salt, baking soda, and hot water to clean silver items.

This is how you can clean silver with aluminum foil

Prepare the solution
Fill a bowl with hot water. Make sure there is enough water to completely submerge the items you are cleaning. Add 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of baking soda to the hot water. Mix well until completely dissolved.

Preparing the paper
Line the bottom of the container with aluminum foil, shiny side up. The paper should cover the entire bottom of the container. Place the silver you are going to clean on the paper and make sure it is in direct contact with the paper.

Dip the silver
Place the items in the container, on top of the paper. Then pour the solution of hot water, salt, and baking soda over the items until they are completely submerged in the mixture.

Pay attention to the reaction
When the silver comes into contact with the solution and the paper, a chemical reaction begins. This is cleaned when the silver sulfide present on the surface is transferred to aluminum foil.

Rinse and dry
Remove the items to be treated after a few minutes and rinse them with warm water to remove any remaining mixture. Dry the silver gently with a thin cloth until dry.

Final polishing
Using a soft, clean cloth, start polishing your items, giving them a dazzling shine.
