(CNN) – The Cuban government on Saturday canceled the press credentials of Spanish news agency Efe in Cuba, which is scheduled for Monday ahead of an opposition protest banned by authorities. However, this Sunday the government issued press credentials to two journalists belonging to the company
According to Efe’s Havana correspondent Atahualpa Amerise, the Spanish government intervened on behalf of the agency after the credentials of journalists in Cuba were revoked.
Amerise said four other Efe journalists in Cuba were without credentials.
An unprecedented event for the agency
In a statement, Efe said this was the first time the Cuban government had told an entire company that it could not work on Communist Island.
It is unclear whether the suspension of their press credentials is permanent or temporary, Efe said.
The Cuban government has not ruled on its decision to withdraw Efe’s recognition, but the United States has said it is behind it. The opposition march is scheduled for Monday. The government arrested hundreds of people and conducted mass investigations after unprecedented protests on the island in July.
