Barcelona president Joan Laporta has once again insisted that he wants Frenkie de Jong to stay at the club. However, the Spaniard also suggested that the Netherlands international accept a salary cut in order for that to happen as the La Liga giants seek to balance their finances. Manchester United remain keen, although a move to Chelsea and Bayern Munich cannot be completely ruled out.
Manchester United have been pressing to sign De Jong all summer, with Erik ten Hag quickly identifying his compatriot as his main target upon taking charge at Old Trafford.
A fee has been agreed between the Red Devils and Barcelona, with the Premier League giants set to pay an initial £63m to bring the Netherlands international to England.
But Laporta, who was speaking during Barcelona’s preliminary round in the US, has now claimed that he wants De Jong to stay and hopes he will accept a salary cut in order for that to happen.

Barcelona recently signed Jules Conde, beating France international Chelsea in the process.
Laporta addressed the player’s arrival from Seville by saying: “Very happy. It is further evidence that footballers want to come even if they pay less.

Laporta also flirted with the possibility of Lionel Messi’s return by saying: “It is clear that Leo’s time at Barcelona did not end as we all wished.
“I feel a shared responsibility for this ending. I think it’s a temporary ending and we’re going to make that ambition a reality.
“We have a clear moral debt with him and I would like the end of his career to be with the Barcelona shirt and to be praised across the board.”
On the rivalry with Real Madrid, he added: “I see some competitors being a little worried about how we do things and that means we are doing them well.
I respect all opinions, but they are clearly relevant. That is, we are becoming competitors again. We’ll see you in the field.”
