UN General Assembly condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine | International | News
This Wednesday, the UN General Assembly unanimously approved a resolution calling on Russia to suspend its invasion of Ukraine and withdraw its troops from the country.
The resolution was approved by 141 votes in favor, 5 votes against and 35 abstentions. Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea and Syria voted against, while China, Bolivia, Cuba, El Salvador, India, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Nicaragua and Pakistan abstained.
The authoritative text, promoted by Europeans and Ukraine, “strongly condemns the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine” in violation of Article 2 of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of threats or forces and urges all. Members must respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of any state.
The UN General Assembly convened on Monday to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, ending Wednesday with a vote on the resolution after a similar speech in the Security Council failed to veto Russia last Friday.
EU ambassador to the UN Olof Skook said at the end of the referendum that “the world is with Ukraine” and that this shows Russia’s “isolation”.
“It’s about whether we choose tanks and missiles or dialogue and diplomacy.” “Russia has chosen aggression. A world of peace, ”he said. (I)
