Hornets’ Clifford taking leave to address health

Coach Steve Clifford, shown here with Hornets star Kemba Walker, has been fired by the Hornets.

Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford will be away from the team “for the immediate future” to address health concerns, the team announced in a statement Wednesday.

Associated head coach Stephen Silas will serves as acting coach in Clifford’s absence.

The Hornets did not provide details of Clifford’s condition “out of respect for Clifford’s privacy.”

Clifford, 56, is in his fifth season as coach of the Hornets. They have compiled a 160-168 record during his first four seasons.

The Hornets (9-13) sit in 11th place in the Eastern Conference entering Wednesday’s home game against the defending champion Golden State Warriors.
