Raptors’ Leonard won’t attend USA Basketball minicamp

Toronto Raptors small forward Kawhi Leonard will not attend USA Basketball minicamp in Las Vegas this week, according to a report from Chris Haynes of ESPN.

Leonard was going to participate in the Team USA camp to show teams interested in trading for him that he’s healthy. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year missed most of last season due to a lingering quadriceps injury.

But now that Leonard has already been traded, the star swingman will use this time to prepare for his transition from the Spurs to the Raptors.

Gregg Popovich is the coach of Team USA. DeMar DeRozan will be at the camp, as well as Kyle Lowry.

Leonard has passed his physical with the Raptors. Toronto has had conversations with Leonard and his camp and talks have been positive.

The Raptors now have roughly 12 months to convince Leonard to re-sign with them. They can offer Leonard almost $50 million more than any other team in 2019, including a fifth year.
