Injury to Kings’ Gay could alter trade plans

Kings forward Rudy Gay was reportedly a strong candidate to be traded.

Sacramento small forward Rudy Gay likely suffered a torn Achilles’ tendon and if so, will be lost for the season, according to the Kings.

The injury occurred during the third quarter of the Kings’ 106-100 loss to Indiana on Wednesday. An MRI to confirm the severity of the injury is scheduled for Thursday.

Gay was among the bigger names expected to be dangled at the trade deadline — as he reportedly planned to opt out of his $14.2 million option at season’s end and enter free agency.

A ruptured Achilles, which can take up to a year to completely heal, will significantly alter the course of Gay, the Kings’ hopes to move him and possibly the league’s entire trading deadline.

Gay, 30, is 6-foot-8 and averaging 18.7 points and 6.4 rebounds.
