At least 55,000 Haitians have received their personal and electoral identity cards from their country, which will allow them to participate in elections and referendums to be held in the western part of the island.
“The service is free for the applicant of the document (free of charge), which can be used to carry out their legal activities along with the passport, and also to vote in the June 2021 referendum to amend the Constitution (postponed by Covid) and in the presidential and parliamentary elections on September 19, 2021. The second round will be held, If necessary, on November 21 in conjunction with municipal and local elections,” explains a press release from the Haitian Embassy in Santo Domingo.
The entity indicated that they receive daily (between Monday and Friday) between 400 and 500 applications from Haitians seeking to register. This process is free and aimed exclusively at those legally residing in the Dominican Republic.
Completed ID cards for Haitian identification are delivered on weekends, either at the embassy headquarters or at various consulates.
In the same way, they confirm that this accreditation program is only funded by the government of the Republic of Haiti, adding that that country has provided electronic devices to receive biometric data from residents.
They also state that the embassy, with its own money, covers the payment and logistics expenses of the contracted staff working in the process.
At the moment, the embassy has not specified the amount of investment in the documentation program.
