Trump says he's “fine” with possible prison or house arrest after historic conviction

(CNN) — Former President Donald Trump said he would be “fine” with serving time in prison or under house arrest following his historic indictment on 34 counts of falsifying business records.

“I accept it,” Trump told Fox News on Sunday's broadcast when asked about the possible punishments. “The other day I saw one of my lawyers on TV saying, ‘Oh, no, you don't want to do that to the president.’ I told him: Don't beg for anything.

But Trump added: “I don't think the public will stand for that. “I'm not sure the public will support that.”

“I think it's hard for the public to accept that, you know, at a certain point, there's a breaking point,” Trump said.

His comments come days after the Manhattan grand jury Convict Trump Among all the charges in his secret money investigation, he is the first former president to be convicted of a felony and the first major-party presidential hopeful in the country to be convicted of a felony in the middle of a White House campaign.

Judge Juan Mercon scheduled Trump's sentencing for July 11 at 10 a.m. ET. Merchan faces a possible sentence of probation or a maximum of 20 years in state prison for each count.

Currently, the former president is in jail awaiting sentencing. In a Fox News interview, he said he had done nothing wrong and criticized the “sick” people involved in his sentencing.

“I'm fighting for the Constitution,” Trump said, adding that the investigation was “harder” on his family than on him. Speaking specifically about his wife, former first lady Melania Trump, the former president said: “He's doing well, but I think it's very difficult for him. I mean, she's fine. But it's… you know, she has to read this crap.
