Davis declines max contract extension offer from Lakers

Lakers forward Anthony Davis is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis declined an offer for a max contract extension Tuesday morning, opting instead for free agency this summer, according to a report from Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

“The decision was made out of salary-cap implications and because Davis wants to solely focus on this season,” Haynes reported, citing sources.

Davis is expected to opt of his contract, which runs through next season, in July. He was averaging 27.7 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.6 blocked shots entering Tuesday’s game vs. New York.

The Lakers (29-7) have the best record in the Western Conference.

Both Davis and fellow Lakers star LeBron James are represented by agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports.
